What Is R-454B and Why Is It Replacing R-410A?
R-410A has been the standard residential HVAC refrigerant for over 20 years. Starting January 1, 2025, the EPA significantly restricted production and import of R-410A under the AIM Act. R-410A has a GWP of 2,088. R-454B has a GWP of 466 — about 78% lower. Carrier's branded name for R-454B is Puron Advance.
What This Means for New Installations
- New equipment, new refrigerant: R-454B systems require equipment specifically designed for it — you cannot add R-454B to an R-410A system.
- A2L classification: R-454B is mildly flammable under specific conditions. This does not affect normal residential installation or operation.
- AHRI matchup still required: New Carrier Comfort and Performance equipment pairs with compatible indoor coils and air handlers. Verify AHRI certification on any system you're quoted.
- Pricing: As R-410A supply tightens, repair costs on older R-410A systems are rising — which affects the repair-or-replace calculation.
What This Means If You Have an Existing R-410A System
Nothing changes immediately. R-410A systems can still be serviced and repaired using existing refrigerant stockpiles. If your R-410A system develops a refrigerant leak and is 10+ years old, the economics now increasingly favor replacement with a new R-454B system.
Should You Rush to Replace?
No. If your current system is working well and under 10 years old, there is no reason to replace it specifically because of the refrigerant transition. If your system is older, inefficient, or facing major repairs — replacing now with a new R-454B system makes sense. You will get better efficiency, a full warranty, and equipment designed for the next generation of refrigerant regulations.
